This One From the Vaults episode features never-before-seen (and never-intended-to-be-seen) footage from a technical rehearsal for our 2018 production of Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa. The footage was shot in short clips to go in a teaser without any of the sound. We just so happened to catch this whole scene from different angles and the crew just so happened to have had all of the camera mics on, and so we edited this together. You’ll hear camera clicks early on, as we were taking photos at the same time (and, as we mentioned, this was never intended to have sound).
First you’ll find part of a monologue from Meg Mundy (Katrina Stevenson) wistfully recalling a memory from her youth that sends her into a bit of a tailspin. Immediately after her sister Chris (Emily Belvo) turns on ‘Marconi,’ the family radio, playing Irish caeli music. Feeling the music and full of emotion, Meg defiantly begins to dance — much to sister Kate’s (Nicole Jeannine Smith) chagrin. Meg pleads with her sisters (Belvo, Jonelle Meyer, and Caitlin Eason) to join in, eventually even breaking down devout schoolmarm Kate. But, ‘Marconi’ always has a mind of its own. The radio shuts off, leaving the sisters winded and disoriented in their outside garden.
Following the scene is the original teaser for our production.
