Costume Designer Katrina Stevenson shared these renderings for Animals Out of Paper with us! We hope you get the chance to see the finished duds with your own eyes while the show is on stage through Aug. 7!
From Katrina:
I try with realistic pieces to use color, fabric, and shapes to help amplify the inner life of each character. To create a visual story to go with the one created by the playwright, director, and actors.
In addition to the given needs of every scene (i.e. Valentine’s Day dinner date), Tatiana and I wanted to explore using color to mirror connection with others and the world. A bulky gray bathrobe for Iliana’s deep isolation. A vibrant red track jacket on Suresh as he folds his T-Rex while bopping to his music.
I wanted to find use shapes and fabrics with folds and pleats…”with each fold, another memory, another experience, and they build up to make something complicated.” Pleats in Ilana’s wide-legged pants, folds in Andy’s bow ties. Subtle imagery.
