What It's About
Gorey Not Gory: An Anti-Warning
This show is not realistically violent, frightening, or bloody. It’s Gorey Stories as in Edward Gorey, not gory as in bloody. Much of this show is outright slapstick comic to slyly tongue-in-cheek. Spoopy, as the kids might say. One vignette, The Curious Sofa, is laden with innuendo and features a bit of shadowplay but contains no staged sexual content. That short illustrated story is available online if a potential customer might like a review prior to getting tickets.A unique, odd, perverse and engaging entertainment. Jenkins. “The other two productions were well before we brought Jeremy on board, and Colleen Cherry was, I think, still in high school the first time we did this. If folks have enjoyed us bringing the weird with events like Shockheaded Peter or Alice or even The Rocky Horror Show &emdash; they really need to make sure they pick up tickets. We can’t wait. The late Edward Gorey (d. 2000) illustrated and wrote short stories, poems, prose and plays based in an eerie and macabre world full of odd characters (often children) that experience strange fates and mysterious demises. Among his best-known works are dark delights like The Gashleycrumb Tinies, The Hapless Child and the titillating tale The Curious Sofa. His illustrations resemble Victorian-era woodcut drawings with a bit of Goya, Aubrey Beardsley and Charles Addams thrown in for good measure. His illustrations were animated for the introduction to the PBS show Mystery!, and he provided production design for popular Broadway productions such as Dracula (for which he won a Tony for Best Costumes). He also illustrated T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the basis for the musical CATS.
Most are not aware that Gorey was ever responsible for a musical, and that’s due to the fact that it closed the same night it opened – Oct. 31, 1978. Around the turn of the century, the play found a second life in black-box theaters who have concentrated on the unique storytelling and the brilliant characters in a more intimate environment.
The list of artists who credit Edward Gorey as a major inspiration is deep, including Tim Burton, Neil Gaiman, Lemony Snicket, and Guillermo Del Toro.

The black-and-white stage design and costumes were surreal and eerie, capturing the dark, whimsical world of Edward Gorey. When we walked outside, the color was overwhelming. I immediately came home and cracked open Amphigorey to show Tim some of the illustrations. Every time I see a Jobsite production, my list of favorites grows. I have been talking to many people about it and I found myself trying to fight giving too much voice to category or style because I love the fact that, along with other beautiful things about this production, it points away from classifications in its embracing its own layers and contrasts… Tight from beginning to end, extremely clever while trusting the audience’s intellect, the musical numbers were BANANAS!
